One of the standout trends for the Raspberry Pi is using it as the heart of a gaming systems that you design and build yourself. Giando went far down the rabbit hole with his design and now you can reap the benefits. If you’re looking for a handheld system powered by a Pi, then the Game-O-Tron is what you’ve been in searching for.
Game-O-Tron features a generous screen in the middle, reminiscent of a Playstation Portable in its design. It also has a small LCD screen below that to indicate battery charge percentage for its pair of 18650 Li-ion power pack. The button layout looks very much like a SNES gamepad, which is no coincidence as the buttons are actually recycled from an original controller.
At its heart is a Raspberry Pi 3, which comes loaded with Recalbox OS. This system supports a wide range of emulators, but with the exception of a few freeware titles, you’ll need to supply your own ROMs. Check it out in the video below, where creator Giando Sigurani shows off his original version, as well as something closer to what’s featured here at around the 6:00 mark.
If you’d like something a bit more minimalistic, you might also check out the Game Boy Zero featured here.
