Today’s modern gaming devices are usually sleek, ergonomic, and incredibly precise. Despite this march of progress, there’s still a suite of classic retro devices that are simply too awesome to let them fade into history.
A perfect example is the Spacetec Spaceorb 360. This was a 6DOF input device that requires two hands to operate. It’s a little unwieldy by today’s standards, but the design is straight out of science fiction.
Since its release in the 90’s, support for the device has ended, one maker set out to carry the torch for this unique input device. The result is the Orbotron 9001. It uses a SAMD 21 chip and an arduino-IDE compatible board. This handles the DB-9 conversion and treats the Orb as a 6-axis, 16-button device.
It was originally intended for 6DOF games like Descent and Quake, and for these types of experience, you won’t find a better controller on today’s market.
