No matter how advanced video games become, you can’t beat the classics. It’s a combination of timeless design, nostalgia, and brilliant simplicity. That’s why retro gaming kits always catch my eye on Tindie, but oftentimes you’ll need to source the actual titles yourself.
Not so with the Retro Classic TV Game! This board allows you to play retro classics on a composite video TV input. It utilizes a Microchip AVR processor, the ATmega328, which outputs the composite video signal and sound through two RCA connectors. Expansion ports also allow you to integrate paddles or a Wii Nunchuk if you have one of those lying around. The unused port pins are on a single inline connector as well for future upgrades.
Power options include a 12V input DC jack or via a USB mini-B slot. There’s a terminal connector on the back to connect the switches. Finally, a reset switch and in-circuit serial programming port enable future software updates.
As part of the order process, you’ll get to choose which game or games you want preloaded on the board. There are also options for a snazzy arcade joypad, a paddle kit, and even one of those aforementioned Wii Nunchuks.
Game choices include Space Invaders (nice), Pong, Breakout, or a combination of the first two. Combine this with a more than reasonable price point, and you’ve got yourself a retro gaming kit worthy of any living room.
