The Volca series from Korg has been a minor revolution in terms of portable music making, with rich analogue drums, lush FM tones and even a mini Modular version to play on the move – operated by batteries and complete with built in speakers. The MIDI Input Adapter for Volca Modular addresses one of their shortcomings; no MIDI in. However Korg have marked the PCBs for this addition and now we have a kit to do the business!
This nifty kit enables MIDI control over the Volca Modular, something which is sadly not offered out of the box. Adding this feature means you can control the unit via MIDI Keyboard as well as using MIDI Clock to sync it to your DAW – such as Ableton, Logic, or Cubase. You can use this control method to play the Volca live or input notes into the built-in step-sequencer.
Some soldering skills are required, but nothing major and you can find all the instructions and photos on the build over on GitHub. Choose to buy the kit or the fully soldered PCB, and all you need to do is carefully open up the Volca Modular and solder 4 cables to join them together.
