Changing strings is the most common element to replace on a guitar, but some players go further to hone the sound, functionality and performance of the instrument by changing elements like the pickups. The Guitar Pickup Phaser Tester is a handy little device which helps ensure new pickups are wired the correct way round when being installed. An out-of-phase pickup will lead to a weaker, more distant signal when mixed with tone controls so getting it right means your guitar will sound its best.
The Guitar Pickup Phaser Tester is used by plugging in a 1/4″ mono cable and attaching the other end to the pickup – some crocodile clips are useful but not essential. One of the LEDs will illuminate to indicate the polarity of the wires. Make sure your stock pickups all have a matched polarity and there will be no phase issues!
It uses a single coin cell battery, which should last for a few years. With numerous pickups coming with no indication of polarity, this device will save time and get the guitar sounding its very best. The Guitar Pickup Phaser Tester is the first product sold by N-Audio who have been fixing guitars for over 15 years. They’ve done a nice video on how to operate the device here:
