If you’ve ever built a computer of any kind, you know that feeling before you turn it on. That moment of hesitation. You start to doubt everything and run through the entire process mentally before finally pressing the button. Building a computer can be a bit of a Schrödinger’s cat dilemma (it both works and doesn’t work until you hit the button).
These PCBs for building a modular 8-bit computer give you the foundation for such a project based on the RC2014 eco-system. The kit comes with 5 modular PCBs that, when assembled, will make an 8-bit computer. The modules include a clock, CPU, ROM, RAM, and serial module.
You’ll need the parts and an RC2014 compatible backplane, but you can buy the original Backplane 8 from RC2014 creator RFC2795 Ltd, or there are others available on Tindie. Once built, you can add additional modules and increase the power and functionality of the computer as much as you’d like.
