From when they first started appearing in the mid-1980s to today, cell phones have changed dramatically. If you miss the tactile buttons of phones of yore, or would simply like to build your own, Tindie seller Peter Misenko, AKA “bobricious” has a solution with his DIY Arduino cell phone pictured above.
As sold on Tindie, his phone comes as a PCB that, in addition to holding electrical components, forms the body of this device. Internal components aren’t included, so you’ll need to purchase them separately. If you want to take on this project, as of this writing, the board is on clearance as a prototype.
As neat as this is, according to the project log on Hackaday.io, a second version is on the way with somewhat different hardware. Perhaps it’s worth checking back with the Permi Technology store to see when version 2 becomes available. On the other hand, what’s available now should be functional (and even features wireless charging) once you actually make it. Check out more details on this phone in the video below:
